Join our accomplished panel of Indigenous women entrepreneurs from Canada's northernmost communities as we discuss the importance of Indigenous women entrepreneurs in tourism and their role in strengthening regenerative and relational tourism in Canada. Learning from the firsthand stories of women from the North, we have applied Indigenous-focused methodologies to gain a deeper understanding of the barriers to entrepreneurship faced by Indigenous women in tourism.

Northern Indigenous Women Entrepreneurs: Pathways to Sustainable Livelihoods through Tourism

The Northern WE in Tourism study is hosting a public gathering to celebrate milestones reached in the Northern WE project. Indigenous women entrepreneurs and their allies are invited to gather for an afternoon of sharing that includes a keynote address by the Honourable Minister Jeanie McLean, Minister of Education and Women’s Directorate, Yukon.

The gathering occurs between 2:00pm and 5:00pm CST. Opening at 2:00pm with a blessing and keynote address, the schedule includes informed discussion by an accomplished panel of Indigenous women entrepreneurs from Canada's northernmost communities. The panel will discuss the importance of Indigenous women entrepreneurs in tourism, their role in economic and destination development, and the role of regenerative and relational Indigenous tourism on the road to reconciliation.

Fiona Kirkpatrick Parsons, Senior National Advisor / kā-nīkānīt Deloitte Indigenous is the panel moderator. Fiona is a proud nehithaw-iskwew (Woodland Cree woman) with Scottish settler heritage and a member of Lac La Ronge First Nation, Treaty 6 Territory in northern Saskatchewan, now living in beautiful Kjipuktuk, Mi’kma’ki (Halifax, Nova Scotia), on the unceded, traditional territory of the Mi’kmaq will moderate our panel.

Northern WE Day of Ceremony - Public Event

Join our accomplished panel of Indigenous women entrepreneurs from Canada's northernmost communities as we discuss the importance of Indigenous women entrepreneurs in tourism and their role in strengthening regenerative and relational tourism in Canada. Learning from the first-hand stories of women from the North, we have applied Indigenous-focused methodologies to gain a deeper understanding of the barriers to entrepreneurship faced by Indigenous women in tourism. Exploring their relationship with the planet, their culture, and their worldviews, we apply Two Eyed Seeing to envision a better business model and journey for the women of the North.
Featured speakers:

- Bobbi Rose Ko, Dinjiizhuh Adventures. Bobbi Rose is Teetl'it Gwich'in (meaning People of the headwaters) raised in Fort McPherson, Northwest Territories she now resides on the land & home of the Kwanlin Dun and Ta'an Kwäch'än Territory in Whitehorse, Yukon.

- Teri-Lee Isaac, Tutchone Tours. Teri-Lee and her family live the Traditional Northern Tutchone lifestyle in the Yukon. These practices allow Teri-Lee’s family to be self-sustaining, keeping essential cultural traditions alive for generations to come.

- Trina Reid, Under The Stump. Located in Rocky Harbour, Newfoundland and Labrador Under the Stump is a family-owned business. Living in Gros Morne National Park requires the balancing of tradition and culture to provide accessible and Indigenous experiences.

IMPACT Conference

We are inviting Indigenous women entrepreneurs in Nunavut to participate in a sharing circle to discuss their aspirations, experiences, and journey as entrepreneurs. This event will be held online via Zoom.

The Northern WE in Tourism study aims to determine the impact of COVID 19 on the tourism industry in northern Canada. Working together, we will identify pathways to training and resources that support Indigenous women in building culturally sustainable livelihoods in tourism and make powerful recommendations on what women in the Yukon need to succeed.

This session will be hosted in Inuktitut.

We are inviting Indigenous women entrepreneurs in the Yukon to participate in a sharing circle to discuss their aspirations, experiences, and journey as entrepreneurs. This event will be held online via Zoom.

Yukon Sharing Circle

On November 29th, 2022, we are inviting Indigenous women entrepreneurs from Quebec to join a sharing circle and discuss their entrepreneurial journey and aspirations. The information you provide will be crucial to informing the study.

Through your stories, we will explore pathways to services and resources and identify gaps and barriers that challenge Indigenous women in accessing the support they need to build sustainable livelihoods.
